Midlands Community Solutions are a founding member of the Birmingham Healthy Air Coalition and Clean Air Justice Network.
The Clean Air Justice Network has collaborated with various organisations and partners in Birmingham to increase awareness about the adverse health effects of air pollution. We recognise that poorer communities, particularly those from white working-class and Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, are disproportionately affected by air pollution and often have limited involvement in air quality discussions.
To address this, we have undertaken several community engagement projects, including initiatives focused on school communities in inner-city Birmingham. These projects aim to empower and educate residents about the challenges posed by air pollution.
For example, the video “Car Free Day Action” highlights a project where the Clean Air Justice Network engaged with students from five Birmingham schools.
These students participated in workshops and events to learn about air pollution and develop campaigns to address the issue. The culmination of this project involved the students presenting their campaigns to the leader of Birmingham City Council, advocating for changes to improve air quality for future generations.
